The Lotherton Hall Collection

The Story Behind the Lotherton Hall Series

This body of work grew from months spent wandering the rooms and grounds of Lotherton Hall, sketchbook in hand, following the light as it moved through the house. What began as simple observation soon became something deeper, a conversation between place, memory, and the quiet rhythms of daily life.

Each room offered its own atmosphere: the soft mauves of the boudoirs, the rich reds of the library and dining room, the gentle glow of bedrooms touched by morning light. These spaces felt lived‑in, layered with stories, and I found myself drawn to the small details  a glint of brass, a patterned curtain, the way a chair seemed to wait for someone just out of view.

Outside, the gardens shifted with the seasons. Frosted borders in winter, bare branches etched against pale skies, and then the sudden abundance of June, colour, warmth, and renewal. Painting these scenes felt like capturing the house breathing.

Together, the interiors and landscapes form a quiet portrait of Lotherton Hall: a place where history and tenderness meet, where beauty hides in both grandeur and simplicity. This series is my way of honouring that stillness, those fleeting, atmospheric moments that ask you to pause, look, and feel.

The Lotherton Hall Collection is on display at Lotherton Hall until August.

Prints from my Objects of Memory Collection are available on my homepage.
