How to make money from your illustrations

Updated: Aug 30, 2021

My Art business has been up and running for 3 years now, and I am pleased to say is going well. As you can imagine, trying to keep up with the amount of original art I need to produce to sustain this is quite exhausting, (although very enjoyable). I still have a day job, and would like to work full time on my Art career.

Having done a lot of research in to how to actually do this, I find I need another way to prop up my business, a passive part, that takes minimal effort, once the hard work at the start is done.

And what's my magic get out of jail free card?, well it was staring me in the face, my Dark Curiosity range. The Dark Curiosity Range is a guess like Marmite, you love it or you hate it, I obviously love it. So, I have given myself a time out of my oil paintings for the next 6 weeks or so to start to concentrate on my Dark Curiosity illustration range, (oh what a lovely fancy title ) but where to begin? Hopefully by then I will have enough products to start the launch of my Dark Curiosity Empire.

I have created this lovely world of characters in my range, and although limited, (note to Dawn, I need to create a lot more!) They are just illustrations that I can put onto things, stationary, homeware, etc etc...

I am lucky in the fact that I have the knowledge of how to use certain software to enable me to duplicate my work and turn it into ....well something.

So I will be attempting to find things to put my illustrations onto, all handmade to start with as this will give me an idea if it would work or not.

Idea number 1 hand made books....

Many many years ago whilst at university I did a book binding course and absolutely loved it, I really enjoy hands on activities of actually making, a 'thing' So I went about watching several You tube videos as the memory isn't that great, and one particular you tube video suggested covering your book in fabric, and I thought well, HELLO.

The market I am aiming for with these hand made books is the younger

end, so I also searched through Etsy to see what was selling and what wasn't, also I need to know how much I could sell them for.

Anyway having got totally way ahead of myself, dreaming of a hand made book empire I thought, well Dawn, you actually need to see if you can actually make one of these things, otherwise, it's a none starter.

so check out my experience in how the book making actually went in next weeks blog.
